Behind the Lens – An interview with our fabulous photographer Nicky Emmerson

As we begin to gear up for the AW10 season, our gorgeous new photography is starting to drop down in store. Shot on the bleak, but beautiful, beaches in Dungeness, Kent, the photos really encapsulate the textures and feel for our AW10 collection. Nicky, our photographer was amazing – working against the brisk winds and unexpected rain to produce this fantastic campaign for us. So, we thought we’d share some of her thoughts with you.

Behind the Scenes AW10

Nicky EmmersonQ: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A PHOTOGRAPHER?
A: Working in the dark room, my art teacher introduced me to black and white photography and processing. I was fascinated by the chemistry, and speed in which my
pictures developed.

Q: DIGITAL OR FILM
A: Can I say both? Film for personal work, digi for professional work. Beauty vs practicality.

Q: WHO HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE MODEL OR PERSONALITY TO SHOOT?
A: I have no particular favourite. I’ve experienced a great variety of models and personalities, many of whom have been warm and giving. And a few who have not!

Q: WHO’S PHOTOGRAPHIC OR FILM WORK DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
A: Paolo Roversi . He inspired me whilst I was a student as I loved his use of Polaroid and 10 x 8 cameras, and the timeless quality of his style.

Q: WHAT DO YO LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER?
A: The freedom; to travel, shoot my own projects, and the constant flow of new people I meet.

Q: WHAT LOCATION WOULD YOU LIST AS YOUR MOST INTERESTING?
A: Clacton Pier. Old English seaside resorts hold a great fascination for me, and Clacton is like walking back in time. I used it for a Teddy Boy story, we just kept shooting till I ran out of film!
